Online vs In-Person Tutoring: Which Is Better for Your Child?

When families begin tutoring, one of the first decisions they face is whether sessions should take place in person or online. Both formats can be highly effective, and the right choice depends on your child’s age, learning style and family schedule. This guide explains the benefits of each and how to decide which will suit your child best.

The Benefits of In-Person Tutoring In-person sessions can take place in your home or at a local library, whichever is most comfortable and convenient for your family. At Beachside Tutoring Collective, we offer in-person tutoring across the Northern Beaches with no travel fees.

In-person tutoring tends to suit younger students and those with shorter attention spans. Having a tutor physically present makes it easier to keep students focused, respond to how they are feeling and keep sessions active and engaging. If your child finds it difficult to concentrate on a screen, in-person sessions are often the best place to start.

The Benefits of Online Tutoring Online tutoring tends to suit older students, as well as students who feel anxious and prefer to learn and study in a quiet, familiar space. Many of our students find online sessions more convenient, and they experience no difference in how much or how quickly they learn.

Online tutoring also removes the limits of location. While our in-person sessions are based on the Northern Beaches, we tutor students across New South Wales online.

How We Make Online Sessions Just as Effective We use Zoom with its shared whiteboard feature, alongside shared Google Docs, so that online sessions are as seamless as working side by side. Students and tutors can write, solve problems and edit work together in real time.

Online students also receive exactly the same structure as in-person students, including to-do lists, homework schedules and the same expectations around workload. In our longer group study sessions, we use interactive tools such as Kahoot! to support memorisation and keep students engaged.

You Do Not Have to Choose Just One Many families combine both formats, or switch between them as their circumstances change. For example, a student may attend in-person sessions during term and move online during the school holidays or particularly busy periods. Pricing is the same for both formats, so families can choose what works best without considering cost.

A Student Who Thrived Online Online tutoring can be especially valuable for students with demanding schedules, such as elite athletes, for whom in-person sessions are not always possible.

One of our students completed their schooling from home in Thredbo during the ski season, which made in-person tutoring impossible. Working around their very busy training schedule, we held online sessions over Zoom to supplement their schoolwork. When the student returned to school, they were not only fully up to date with their work, but also moved up a reading class and excelled in their Mathematics topics.

Which Format Is Right for Your Child? As a general guide, in-person tutoring often suits younger students and those who find it hard to focus on a screen, while online tutoring often suits older, independent or anxious students, and families with busy or changing schedules.

Our best advice is to keep an open mind. Many families are surprised by which format works best for their child, and the only way to know is to try. Your child’s free trial session can take place either online or in person, and we are happy to help you test both.
