From Disengaged to Band 6: One Student's HSC Journey at Beachside Tutoring Collective

Every student's path through high school is different. For some, the challenges are academic. For others, they stem from confidence, learning environment or simply falling behind at a critical moment. This is the story of one of our students, who began Year 11 believing that school was not for them and finished Year 12 with results they had never thought possible.

Where It Began In the first half of Year 11, the student's parents noticed a change. Their child was beginning to dislike school, had become frustrated with their classes and had stopped submitting homework. These are signs we often see when a student is struggling with the content but has not yet found the words to explain why.

What the Trial Session Revealed During the free trial session, we spent time discussing how the student felt about school. It became clear that the content was moving faster than they could keep up with, and that gaps from Year 10, particularly in Mathematics and English, were making each new topic harder to grasp. The student also has ADHD and found it difficult to concentrate in a busy classroom environment.

Their subjects included Mathematics Standard, English Advanced, English Extension 1, Legal Studies, Society and Culture, and Aboriginal Studies, so there was a great deal of ground to cover.

Finding the Right Match We matched the student with a tutor who had previously worked as a Student Learning Support Officer in NSW public schools, giving them direct experience supporting students with diverse learning needs. The tutor had also achieved Band 6 and E4 results in the same subjects the student was studying, so they understood exactly what each course demanded.

Just as importantly, their personalities aligned. Both were energetic and outgoing, and this rapport made a remarkable difference. A student who had felt disengaged in class was soon comfortably working through two-hour sessions, which allowed a great deal to be achieved in each one.

Building the Foundations The first few weeks focused on rebuilding the foundational knowledge the student had missed in Year 10 Mathematics and English, as well as the content from the first half of Year 11 across all subjects. Rather than simply keeping up with each week's work, this approach addressed the underlying gaps that had been holding them back.

The Results By the end of the first term, the change was clear. With a solid grasp of the fundamentals, the student was displaying far greater confidence and pride in their work. Together, we also developed study strategies that the student began applying independently in class and to their homework.

That progress continued through to the HSC. By the end of Year 12, the student achieved Band 6 results across all of their subjects.

Beyond the HSC Perhaps the most meaningful outcome was the change in how the student saw themselves. They told us they had not believed they were capable of achieving such results, and that because of their ADHD diagnosis, they had felt school was simply not for them.

Today, that student is studying Law at university. They have told us that the study and preparation techniques they developed during tutoring are tools they continue to use, both in their studies and in daily life.
