How to Get the Most Out of Tutoring: 7 Tips for Parents and Students

Tutoring is an investment in your child’s education, and like any investment, the results depend on how it is used. While a skilled tutor makes a significant difference, the habits students build during and between sessions are just as important. The following tips will help your family get the greatest value from every session.

1. Come Prepared A small amount of preparation allows each session to focus on what matters most.

Primary school students need only a pen and paper. A device can be helpful but is not necessary.

Senior students should bring their textbook for each subject, their own class notes, any assessment notifications and their device. Notes based on what is currently being covered in class are particularly valuable, as they allow the tutor to align sessions closely with schoolwork.

At Beachside Tutoring Collective, we provide everything else, including practice material, exemplar essays and supplementary notes.

2. Study Smarter, Not Longer The habit that most clearly separates students who progress quickly from those who do not is the use of effective study and memorisation strategies. There are only so many hours in the day, and how a student uses that time determines how well they perform. This is especially important for students who want to maintain a healthy balance between study, sport, work and social commitments.

3. Make the Most of Time Between Sessions Learning does not stop when the session ends. We set homework, revision and practice tasks based on each student’s upcoming assessments, designed to reinforce what they are learning in both tutoring sessions and class.

We also teach proven revision techniques, such as the 3-5-7 method, a spaced revision approach in which content is reviewed at set intervals after it is first learnt. Techniques like this help students retain information for longer and reduce the need for last-minute study.

4. Understand What the Marking Criteria Want Hard work does not always translate into results. To achieve high marks, students need to understand what the marking criteria require and what each question is actually asking.

This is often more straightforward in subjects such as Mathematics. In English and the humanities, however, a student can work extremely hard without seeing improvement simply because their responses do not address the criteria. If your child feels they are putting in significant effort without results, this may be the reason, and it is something a tutor can help address quickly.

5. Use Progress Reports to Stay on the Same Page Our progress reports ensure that families, students and tutors share a clear understanding of how each student is progressing.

For younger students, progress reports are a useful way for parents to see what homework needs to be completed and to ensure their child stays on track.

For senior students, we encourage autonomy and independence. The volume of work in Years 11 and 12 means students must take ownership of their own learning, so progress reports for senior students are generally used to keep parents informed and to raise any concerns. Our study schedules and to-do lists help senior students stay organised and on top of their workload.

6. Support Without Adding Pressure Parents play an important role in their child’s success. The most effective support involves reinforcing good habits, recognising when your child is feeling overwhelmed, and knowing when additional help may be needed.

School can be stressful, and a strong support network is one of the best protections against burnout. It also tends to lead to better results.

7. Prioritise Consistency Over Cramming Some families like to book additional sessions before exams or assessment deadlines, and we are always happy to accommodate this. However, our approach is built on consistent effort and regular sessions throughout each term. This reduces stress and limits the need for cramming, and students who follow their schedule and study plan often find they do not need additional sessions at all.

The Biggest Predictor of Progress Across every year group we work with, from Kindergarten to the HSC, one pattern stands out. Students who work independently, engage actively during and between sessions, and complete all set work consistently make the fastest improvement.
